My learning goal: is to understand psychological theories of intrinsic and extrinisic motivation to improve engagement in learning environments.
My topic is:
- The Psychology of Motivation: How do intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence engagement in learning?
Having a deeper understanding of this helps us to increase engagement in schools. This video shows us that intrinsic motivation is driven by internal satisfaction because it is interesting/enjoyable, and extrinsic motivation comes from external rewards such as recognition. This video shows that extrinsic motivation boosts short-term motivation where as intrinsic motivation increases long-term motivation. The video helped simplify a complex psychological topic into easy-to-follow examples and visuals. The video reiterated that both intrinsic and extrinsic are important in education, so incorporating both is crucial for high engagement. I liked this video and thought it did a great job explaining it.
It made me realize that a balance needs to be fostered between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation for students to learn best. To encourage a balance between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, teachers can use strategies such as providing learning environments where they offer meaningful choices and highlight the relevance and personal significance of the material. As students’ internal motivation to learn and study grows, teachers can reduce the usage of extrinsic rewards. They can encourage students to consider their own interests and intrinsic motivations for learning. Teachers can help foster a love of learning and help students become more self-directed in their academic path by finding a balance between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
Next week, I plan to focus on how teachers/learners can cultivate intrinsic motivation. What makes intrinsic motivation so meaningful? We will be diving into the why behind it.
