Community Contribution #2

I believe an employer reviewing my social media presence can see both my personal and professional interests. Since I am interested in pursuing a career in marketing or business administration after I graduate this April, I think it is important that my digital presence reflects me while still remaining professional. Platforms like LinkedIn allow me to showcase my work experience, my education, and the skills that I possess for potential future jobs.

My personal social media accounts can definitely influence how an employer perceives me. This makes me more aware of what I interact with, share, and post online. In this generation, employers typically assume everyone has some online presence, so it is not frowned upon to have a personal account where you share personal things; however, if that presence is inappropriate, that is where it becomes an issue. This insensitive content could affect the employer’s perception of the applicant. Since a young age, I have always been extremely aware of what I post; I also personally like to keep all of my accounts private.

Looking at how employers view people’s social media presence makes an interesting connection to marketing because social media is a significant part of many brands’ way of gaining traction. A lot of businesses communicate with their audiences through social media, so they need to ensure that their brand aligns well with the content they are posting. Also, making sure it is aesthetically pleasing is a major factor for becoming popular in society today, as well as staying up to date with trends. With my personal online experience as well as my experience being a marketing coordinator for a local brewery, I feel I have a strong understanding of digital branding both personally and professionally. Overall, this makes me think more carefully about my digital footprint and how the content I share can contribute to my professional identity.
